How can new forms of digital documentation and collaborative storytelling be used to make transnational experiences visible and shareable?

I co-conceived the 4531km.eu project and carried it out together with all participants, curating the crew and initiating and facilitating events along the journey to create a transnational experiential space for collaborative storytelling.

4531 km.eu was a Nightliner bus tour by Berlin creatives across Eastern Europe—and at the same time an experimental research project exploring new forms of storytelling, collaboration, and digital documentation of travel and encounter spaces.

Together with Andreas Gebhard, I initiated this cross-border experiment: a 4531-kilometer road trip through Central and Eastern Europe. An interdisciplinary crew of Berlin-based creatives, journalists, designers, and cultural workers traveled from Berlin via Prague, Bratislava, Cluj, Bucharest, and Varna to Thessaloniki.

The project aimed to go beyond common Western European narratives, revealing new perspectives on European cities, their creative scenes, and social realities. Rather than a tourist gaze, local encounters, conversations, and joint events with actors from culture, media, and civil society were at the center.

For the journey, we developed a WordPress plugin that aggregated the social media posts of all crew members. Each participant documented the trip from their own subjective perspective. The content was compiled in real time into an interactive timeline and map, making both the temporal progression and the geographical stages of the tour experientially accessible. The plugin was released as an open-source tool on GitHub, serving as an experimental infrastructure for collaborative, decentralized storytelling—and can be reused and further developed by other projects.

4531 km combined technological innovation with cultural curiosity. The project explored how digital tools can make collective experiences visible—and how European connections can be re-narrated beyond political or media simplifications. The tour and the development of the plugin were supported by the Medieninnovationszentrum Babelsberg (MIZ).
